Deb- thanks for the feedback! This definitely shows how quickly one can get up and running with Ning. We're actually in the process of setting up a community site for users of our "I Have Kids" Facebook app. I'll keep you posted if we stumble upon more useful customization tips.

LibraryThing is a cool app. I started using it a couple years back and haven't gone back in some time. I'll have to revisit it, thx for the reminder!

Thanks for this great post, Chad. I wasn't sure about ning until a co-worker of mine and I established a site for discussing sustainability of nonprofit organizations with our friends and colleagues. We're up and running now, with twenty-plus members in less than a week (and we've only sent out a preliminary invitation to about 60 folks; more going out soon).

I didn't know about adding custom pages to ning (and still don't -- so I'd love to learn more about that), so I decided to expand our options and learn about a wiki platform at the same time. I set up a Sustainability Movement Wet Paint wiki (http://sustainabilitymovement.wetpaint.com/) and linked it as a companion site to our ning site. Now all members of the ning site have the option of joining the wiki and adding their own related content.

Now I'm experimenting with new ways to bring in related content via Delicious and LibraryThing (for starters) on widgets on the ning and the wiki. I'm finding that embedding widgets to be a challenge, but I'll get there!

Not a bad week's work!
