Partnering with Daily Grommet

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Today marks a new frontier for I Have Kids on Facebook, as we’ve added new content from the folks at Daily Grommet. We wanted to share a bit about how we came in contact with the Daily Grommet team, and what we hope this relationship will mean for our I Have Kids users.

A couple of months ago Todd & I met with Daily Grommet founder Jules Pieri at her Lexington, MA office:

Daily Grommet HQ

Daily Grommet HQ

Todd was on a customer site and could only attend by phone, but I was available and jumped at the chance to meet a potential advertising partner in person. In this virtual world it’s easy to fall back on the logic that all business can be conducted by phone/IM/E-mail, but the truth is there’s still no substitute for sitting with someone face-to-face. From the moment I arrived, I could feel that familiar start-up energy and I knew this could be a solid partner for CoreBlox. Jules, Todd & I had a productive conversation where we outlined our goals for introducing targeted advertising into our Facebook app, and we came to understand why Daily Grommet would be a good fit.

Saying we’ve been cautious about advertising in I Have Kids is like saying Facebook is popular. Web application publishers, and Facebook application publishers in particular, are prone to receive a rash of angry feedback from their user base when their attempts to monetize cross that fine line and become an annoyance. Some have noted how application users are conditioned to tune out advertising altogether.  There is no shortage of sites out there that offer social application advertising options, but we did not want to disrespect our I Have Kids users by pitching them on airline tickets, timeshares, or the latest goods from a Google AdSense banner. If we were going to advertise then we wanted to find a service that would bring fresh, meaningful content to an audience that is mostly moms. We believe we’ve found this fit in Daily Grommet. I’ll let Jules tell you the Grommet story in her own words:

d src="http://blip.tv/play/AdO_QpCfSQ" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="345" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">

We’re expecting that the Grommet widget will be a solid complement to our Kids app, introducing our users to interesting products they might not otherwise have discovered while supporting small entrepreneurs in the process. Our goal is to have users look forward to seeing what today’s Grommet is, and perhaps they’ll even find the item attractive enough to purchase for themselves or their family & friends. With the holiday season approaching, perhaps Daily Grommet will become a nice alternative to fighting crowds at the local mall. :-)

So if you’re an I Have Kids user (and if you aren’t, you should be!), please take a moment to check out the Grommet widget on the left side of your screen and let us know what you think in the comment section or by writing to us at support@coreblox.com.

MassHighTech Mentions CoreBlox & I Have Kids

Friday, September 5th, 2008

Just a quick follow-up on an earlier entry that I made regarding the power of Twitter. As you know we were able to connect with MassHighTech as a result of an earlier tweet I’d made, and the folks there were nice enough to include us in an article about area Facebook application developers and some of the challenges they face. It was great to learn about other local companies who are active in the Facebook application world such as Stylefeeder Inc. The article makes mention of our plans to begin monetizing I Have Kids as soon as possible. Monetization can be a sensitive issue for users, so we want to do everything we can to ensure whatever we do will not disrupt our users’ enjoyment or jeopardize our 5-star rating.

If you have a moment, feel free to read through the article and share your thoughts with us. And if you’re in New England, be sure to add MassHighTech to your regular reading list!

It pays to tweet up!

Lately the CoreBlox team has been making a push to be more visible and interactive with our Facebook user base, our colleagues in the Identity & Access Management (IAM) space, and the social networking community at large. Some of the new places you’ll find a CoreBlox presence include:

Based on this excellent post from Joel Postman of Socialized, I learned that merely establishing a presence isn’t enough. According to Joel, we should:

“Explain why you are on Twitter and who is responsible for your company’s presence there. Consumers want to talk to a ‘real person,’ and not a bot.”

The short answer to the ‘why’ is that we want to network and grow our business, and we’re convinced that the way we’re going to get maximum traction with anything we do (especially our social apps) is to be as visible and accessible as possible.

As for the ‘who’: I’ll be handling most of our social web interactions for CoreBlox with some much needed assistance from my colleague Dave Saraiva. In addition to maintaining the CoreBlox presence, Dave & I are both on Twitter talking about our kids, music, sports, and the things we’re passionate about in our daily CoreBlox lives.

Our investment in a social presence is already paying dividends. Earlier this week our I Have Kids application was featured in the popular mommy blog MommyGoggles.com. Yesterday I was thrilled to receive this tweet from Mass High Tech, a popular and well-respected regional trade journal:

If you’re out there reading this and haven’t done so already, please take a moment to connect with us! Hopefully this post has erased any questions you had about how to do so. :-)

CoreBlox Hits the Big Screen @f8

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

There is little doubt that a small company’s success in the Web 2.0 world depends on the quality of the solutions it builds. Bring a sub-par solution to market and chances are you’ll quickly find yourself back at the drawing board trying to come up with a new idea. If you need proof, just have a look at all the solutions that ended up in the TechCrunch Deadpool.

Of course there are other success factors at work beyond solution quality, and one of them is name/brand recognition. It’s a timeless marketing question that existed long before Web 2.0 – how do I get my name and my solution out there for the world to see? (After all, one could argue that ending up in the Deadpool isn’t so bad because at least you got to TechCrunch in the first place.)

Recently CoreBlox made a concerted effort to let people know about our I Have Kids Facebook application. We started donating money to charity on behalf of our user base; we launched a campaign on the Facebook ad network; we launched a support site on GetSatisfaction.com; we even created a Twitter account where you can follow our application and some of the interesting kid-focused news articles we find. The results have been very positive, as our user base has grown to over 40,000 users from all over the world who have rewarded us with a 5-star application rating. In a Facebook application world where often the most popular applications allow you to Superpoke your friends or turn them into zombies, we’ve manged to find a niche with our “serious” app.

But sometimes the best kind of publicity is the stuff you don’t expect. Take what happened to us yesterday when a friend who was attending Facebook’s f8 event happened to notice a familiar logo on the presentation screen during Mark Zuckerberg’s keynote address. We were fortunate in that photographer Brian Solis was able to get an excellent capture of the moment:

(CC) Brian Solis, www.briansolis.com and bub.blicio.us.

(CC) Brian Solis, www.briansolis.com and bub.blicio.us.

Take a look just to the left of the pink ribbon near the center of the screen and you’ll see our bright blue & white CoreBlox logo. :-)

Zuckerberg’s keynote emphasized that Facebook will reward applications that provide the most value, so we’re confident that our I Have Kids community will continue to grow in the coming months. In the meantime, thanks to all our 40,000+ users who helped CoreBlox to play a role in the f8 event!

I Have Kids™ – May 13 Release

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Here is a description of the changes we released yesterday. In general, the goal with this release was to better accommodate users who want to track kids of family and friends but are not parents themselves.

  • For non-parents, the ‘I Have Kids’ profile box on a user’s Facebook profile page no longer appears. These users can now have the app installed (and access the app via the ‘I Have Kids’ link in the Applications list on the left) without any reference to ‘I Have Kids’ on their profile page.

  • For non-parents, their ‘I Have Kids’ homepage is the Friends’ Kids page. Also, non-parents will see the Kids Birthday feature (which normally appears on a user’s My Kids page) on this Friends’ Kids page.
